Women's activist Mavis Leno and CNN Muslim producer dialogue in Dallas
At the 26th annual Dallas Women’s Foundation’s luncheon, Mavis Leno, wife of talk show's comedian Jay Leno, shared with the audience accounts about her journey into activism to help empower Afghani women and girls under the Taliban regime.
“Global Women’s Voices: A Dialogue” was carried on by CNN Muslim journalist, Maria Ibrahimji, who together with Leno discussed how local voices can make positive change globally. The voices of local Dallas/Fort Worth Muslim women were heard during the event, when Texas Muslim Women’s Foundation was acknowledged for its local efforts in building bridges among communities.
Leno’s story started in the late nineties when she joined Feminist Majority Foundation, an organization for women’s equality, non-violence, economic development and empowerment of women and girls in all sectors of society. Leno was shocked to learn about the deteriorating status of Afghani women, who prior to the Taliban included women as elected officials in Kabul.
(...)When asked about the role of Islam in the status of women in Afghanistan, Leno confirmed that “the Quran is more liberal with women than the Bible.” She added that Prophet Mohammad was married to a wealthy and powerful woman, implying that Islam has nothing against empowering women; on the contrary it is a religion that supports women’s rights. It's difficult to believe that Mavis Leno is uninformed when it comes to Islam.
There is a willful and deliberate blindness when it comes to leftist and feminist ideologies.
It's impossible to fathom the twisted kind of thinking behind Leno's statement, "the Quran is more liberal with women than the Bible” and "it (Islam) is a religion that supports women’s rights"!
Apparently Mavis Leno, "champion" of womens rights in Afghanistan, has never heard of female genital mutilation, the stoning of rape victims, honor killings, 6 year old "wives", the Quranic sanctioned sexual abuse of little girls, sex slaves, religiously sanctioned beatings by husbands, a woman's worth being half that of a mans, enforced ignorance, and the list goes on and on...

I know, they all told me:Don't read blogs! It's full of fallacious crap! But Im seriously nauseous by all of your ignorance. first of all know the difference between ISLAM as a religion and people who say they are Muslim. so heres the thing: Islam liberates women! Scoff on, but say nothing: your "extensive knowledge" on Islam doesn't extend past foxx news and hollywood films, have you ever met a Muslim? Didn't think so. Our prophets wife was a strong independent business woman. its the first religion to officially give women the right to vote and to an inhertance, now weather or not certain Muslims decide not to follow it is their sin. Christianity as a religion did not, but of course we have a bible written by Paul so it was only befitting of his time to make women property. and the Taliban is NOT a representation of Islam, theyre not more than 1% of the Muslim population of the world yet you make it sound they project the views of every Muslim. We have Muslim women in American politics as is was 1400 years ago with our prophet. And don't you think Mrs.Leno sees what's happening in Afghanistan? She's just smart enough to relaize its not our religion that opresses women, but a radical minority or backwards cultural practices.
