Enjoy the ride.
As to Barry's first response; I'm not at all sure how Voltaire's opinion of Islam has any bearing whatsoever, as the question was limited to whether Jefferson was talking about "the Qur'an and Muslims" as Barry claimed. It is now agreed that Jefferson was not, and so going on about Voltaire and "typical irrational behavior from the Enlightenment and Humanist groups" is absolutely irrelevant and serves only to obfuscate the issue. Still, I appreciate the admission that Barry was incorrect, and I will look forward to the retraction on his blog. My point was that as Jefferson had no direct interaction with Islam or Muslims up to that time, as a fan of Voltaire he was obviously exposed to Voltaire’s opinions on Islam and Muhammad, thus his opinions and his views on Christianity would be, at least tinged with what he had read from Voltaire. I merely want to point that out.
Unfortunately, Barry continues, in order to attempt to place words in my mouth that I did not utter:
The leaders of Islam are many. There is no Pope or similar talking head who represents the worlds 1.6B Muslims. The recognized seat of Sunni Islamic jurisprudence is Al-Azhar University in Cairo . As you see fit to merely claim that this is blatantly false, yet provide no proof this is so, I can only say that you need to actually do the research on the University and you will find that indeed it is from where Sunni fatwas flow, as well as legal rulings based in sharia law.
Let's go back and see precisely what it was I said was "blatantly false":
I would likewise be very interested to see any evidence for Sommer's claim that the grand mufti of Egypt is the "highest Muslim religious authority in the world," because no such evidence exists; it's a blatantly false claim among many others.
Since Ali Gom’a has been, and still is today a pre-eminent Islamic scholar associated with Al-Azhar, as I pointed out, it is natural to talk about where Ali-Gom’a practices his Islamic dispensation, and what Al-Azhar University plays in this. If your looking for a diploma on the wall, or a business card saying Ali-Gom’a is the “fearless leader” (sorry rocky and Bullwinkle), you won’t find one. The label “Grand Mufti of Egypt” is usually enough of an identifier for most people. Just so you know, Ali-Gom’a has issued a fatwa against statues in homes, he supports Hizballah, and has advocated the drinking of urine. Just because you believe there is no leader in Islam does not mean that there isn/t. Virtually every reference to Ali-Gom’a refers to him as an Islamic scholar of the highest order, even the government of Egypt refers to him as their
top Islamic authority. Deny this all you want, the fact is Ali-Gom’a is the guy for sunni.
Here is an excerpt from USNews, the full article at the link below…
“Rising from the conference table after a long discussion of his views about Islam and the contemporary world, the 55-year-old Gomaa cuts a stately figure in his Al-Azhar University scholar's garb, a dark caftan covering his white, ankle-length djellaba and a white and red cap atop his roundish head. As the grand mufti, Gomaa heads the Dar al Ifta (literally, the house of fatwas), a government agency charged with issuing nonbinding religious legal opinions on any question, large or small, that might come up in the life of a faithful Muslim. Part scholar and theologian, part jurist and administrator, he is a completely busy man—not least because his office issues some 5,000 fatwas a week, including both the official ones that he himself crafts on important issues and the more routine ones handled via phone and Internet by a dozen or so subordinate muftis. When not overseeing this operation, the sheik also appears on radio and television, participates in conferences, sometimes preaches and teaches (including at nearby Al-Ahzar University, Sunni Islam's foremost seat of learning, where he was once a student and professor), and gives speeches abroad, mostly in the cause of promoting his broad-minded, pragmatic, and, he insists, traditionalist understanding of Islam and sharia law”

There is no straw-man here.
I checked my original source link for his quote, it has been scrubbed from the original article. I know you will not believe, but that is all I can say. Changing articles, removing links, changing words have all been part of Islamic obfuscation for a long time. I am sorry that once again, Islam has shown itself to be less than honest about what is said.
If making up straw-man arguments is how Barry intends to argue his points, then I suspect he'll be doing my work for me; after all, this sort of clear intellectual dishonesty is widely known as the mark of a charlatan.
As far as Ali Goma'a himself is concerned, firstly, I object to the attempt to shift the burden of proof on to me. I have said that no evidence exists that the grand mufti of Egypt is the "highest Muslim religious authority in the world." The next step, then, is not for Barry to demand evidence that he is not (and thus to demand that I perform the logical impossibility of proving a negative); it is instead incumbent upon Barry to provide some evidence that his claim is true. Barry is the one making the positive claim here, not me. I merely disbelieve what he says, and expect that if what he says is true, then he will be able to prove it.
While he's at it, perhaps he will dig up the actual article penned by Ali Goma'a in the April 7, 2008 Al Ahram and show us all where this hateful quote appears, as, while there are plenty of repetitions of this claim on the Internet, nobody seems to be able to provide the original context in which it is found. If he cannot do that, he needs to retract this claim as well. Since I strongly doubt Barry has ever so much as glanced at the actual article, perhaps it will help if I reproduce it here. Here's the English translation of Ali Goma'a's column from that day:
The Crises of the Negative Dutch Film
Al-Ahram Newspaper April 7, 2008
Dr. Ali Gomaa
The Dutch ambassador visited me recently and this was before the public viewing of the negative Dutch film. During his visit I mentioned the hadith of the boat which is narrated by N‘uman ibn Bashir that the Messenger of God peace and blessings be upon him said, “the one who is firm in guarding the boundaries of God and those who fall into them is like a group together on a boat. Some of them are on top, and others on the bottom. The people in the bottom, when they need water, go to the people at the top. They decided, instead, to puncture the bottom of the boat to take their share of water and not bother the group at the top. If the group at the top does not stop them, they will all drown.” (Bukhari and Muslim).
I told the ambassador it is important to “slap on the wrists” those transgressors who desire destruction and dissention. People’s hearts are not in the hands off any one human and this sort of negativity that comes from people not in positions of authority and responsibility affects the well-being of countries and citizens, even if they are not religious. They have made commercial benefit the basis of their actions, and what will be done if a boycott takes place of that particular nation, without a call from any one person, and the losses reach into the billions? This is the end of what I wanted to share with you regarding this visit.
Then the Dutch Ambassador sent me a release issued from the Dutch government and it stated, “This film shows graphic images and places the responsibility with Islam and the Holy Qur’an. The government condemns this film as well as those who produced it. Mr. Wilders places violence and Islam on the same side of the scale and we reject this interpretation. Likewise, the majority of Muslims reject violence and extremism and they are sometimes the victims.” The release was concluded with these words. “The Dutch government believes in a society that places freedom and respect at par.”
Now, I ask about the strange position of European nations that rejects adopting the UN proposal that criminalizes harm towards and disrespect of religions. What is their purpose in this? Have Muslims been silent in regards to this kind of harm? What are the necessary practical steps required that they should take? Muslims have not been silent; they have risen in front of the world in a better and stronger position in that they are striving to criminalize harm and disrespect towards religion.
There is a young man inEgypt , Moez Masoud, who produced a short movie some time ago that is now being viewed again that carries the same name as this negative film “Fitnah” which talks about the reality of Islam. There is also the organization “Bridges” run by Mr. Fadil Suleiman and the movies he produces that talks about the same subjects. As for those who desire dissension and to destroy bridges, we are against them from whichever religion they are from the East or the West.
Holland is one of the most densely populated countries in the word. They have approximately 16 million residents within 41 square kilometers. It is therefore one of the most densely populated regions of Western Europe . Its population is also varied according to faith. There are atheists, Catholics, Protestants, and Muslims. As for the atheists, they make up approximately 40%, Catholics 31%, Protestants 21%, and Muslims are around 5%.
There is great variation within the Muslim community itself. There are Sunni Muslims, Shites, Alawites, and Ahmadis. There are also Sufi groups and the government for the most part allows them to practice freely regardless of their theology, principles, or political positions. Muslims have the right to build mosques, to establish religious organizations, despite the country being secular and having a clear division of church and state. Yet churches, mosques, and other religious institutions continue to operate in an independent fashion.
Within the Dutch model Muslims have the same societal and national rights like any other citizen inHolland . The Dutch constitution forbids discrimination based on religion or creed, and the constitution guarantees equal state funding for both Christian and Muslim schools. Muslims also participate in Dutch politics and there is even an Islamic-Democratic party that has members in the council of Leiden , and two members of the national government are Muslims.
These facts help us picture the country from which this person and this film have come from; a film that has caused this crisis. Issuing a legal ruling on any situation or issue is part of framing the situation and issue correctly. We are in great need of an accurate frame for all that is around us in order for us to issue these rulings that achieve the goals of our religion and our worldly life, and that also achieve the goals of humanity which will allow us to continue in the path of development.

Where in this column does Ali Goma'a call for the death of anybody? Perhaps the Arabic version says something different... it would have to, for Barry's accusation to be true. Barry says, "I never accuse without proof," so let's put that claim to the test. I hope that he will hasten to correct my misapprehension by providing to us the source of his purported Ali Goma'a quote.
Even Dinesh D’Souza refers to Ali Gom’a as “the second highest ranking cleric in the Arab world” Does his name not ring a bell?
Indeed it does; I am well aware of who Dinesh D'Souza is. What I'm not certain about is why we should automatically take the word of a self-described evangelical Christian as the final say on what Muslims believe and to whom they might pay attention. One important step in critical thinking is evaluating the trustworthiness of a source, and part of that is determining likelihood of bias. Would Barry be willing to uncritically accept "facts" about Christianity and Christians if they were espoused by, say, Richard Dawkins, Sam Harris or Penn Gillette? D’Souza was used as a name which most recognize, not as an expert on what to call someone. Yet, by D’Souza acknowledging that Ali-Gom’a is an Islamic expert adds credibility to that claim. As noted above, the government of Egypt recognizes Ali-Gom’a as a top islamic cleric, D’Souza merely echos that fact. I never said I accept D’Souza as an expert on Islam, and would not do so. He is not, but by accepting Ali-Gom’a as a top cleric he adds credibility to that claim. He does not define Islam or it’s leaders, he re-enforces the definition.
I'll also note that even if Dinesh D'Souza is taken as the ultimate authority about What Muslims Believe, his claim about Ali Goma'a directly contradicts Barry's; is Ali Goma'a the "highest religious authority in the world" or just "the second highest ranking cleric in the Arab world"?
Barry then repeats some claims (again, without evidence) and continues obfuscating with anecdotes. We are supposed to be shocked that a politician like Arafat says one thing to one group and something different to another. I'm certainly not going to defend Arafat, but I will absolutely deny that because any politician does a thing, that this means that thing is necessarily part of that politician's religion. Are we to assume that all Christians -- or even a large minority -- think that adultery is acceptable because of what Jimmy Swaggart did? Of course not. And yet this is apparently precisely what Barry expects us to do in the case of Muslims.
It doesn't matter how many examples of Muslims saying untrue things Barry has; it's absolutely groundless to try and generalize individual anecdotes to 1.6 billion people. Remember, the book is not the man. Sure, anyone can sit on the couch and read a book and say, "Aha! Everyone who believes this book must therefore believe every inference that I can logically draw from the text." But that approach ignores reality, and the way that humans behave. People read a book, assign their own weights to various parts, treat some bits as ironclad and others as optional, and even ignore large swaths while simultaneously maintaining that they believe every word of it. After all, how many "Bible-believing Christians" actually refuse to wear cotton/polyester blends, eschew eating shrimp, clams, and lobster, or shave off the hair of their wives should those wives fail to cover their heads while praying in church?
Once again, he also brings up "taqqiya" and pretends it allows Muslims to lie to non-Muslims apparently whenever they feel like it. As has been pointed out to Barry in the past, taqqiya allows Muslims to dissimulate when the truth would place them in danger. That's it. I've yet to see any proof otherwise. It does not matter what your definition of taqiyya is, or how you perceive taqiyya is practiced. Western perceptions regarding taqiyya and kitman in no way come to understand what the concepts mean to Muslims regarding interaction with the west. Islamic doctrine today, as defined by it’s leaders and practiced by millions of Muslims tells them that when in war, it is necessary to lie to protect oneself against the enemy. As the west is seen as the enemy of Islam, Muslims will lie to advance Islam, and to live to fight another day. Let me provide one example of taqiyya: the insistence of a Muslim apologist that "of course" there is freedom of conscience in Islam, and then quoting that Qur'anic verse -- "There shall be no compulsion in religion." {2:256} But the impression given will be false, for there has been no mention of the Muslim doctrine of abrogation, or naskh, where such an early verse(Meccan) has been cancelled out by later, far more intolerant and malevolent verses(Medinan). In any case, history shows that within Islam there is, and always has been, "compulsion in religion" for Muslims, and for non-Muslims. Taqiyya at work, which we see regularly from Islamic clerics and apologists.
Barry can't have the question of his expertise both ways, either. On one hand, he's "never claimed to be an expert", but on the other, he keeps touting his years and years "studying" Islam. But he also, tellingly, admits:
25 years of study(12 in-depth) leads me to certain conclusions, most of which are based on the words spoken by those who say, without reservation that their goal is to see me, you and the rest of the non-Muslims dead.
... I suppose that it's only natural that someone who limits his study to the most extreme voices is going to come away with a sharply skewed view of the subject as a whole. The voices which define Islam today are those which take the dominate narrative. The doctrine, ideology, theology and tenets of Islam as it is written in the Qur’an and hadiths of Muhammad are the defining narrative from Al-Azhar University , the Grand Ayatollah al-Sistani in Iran and Ali-Gom’a. Those voices are not moderate or tolerant, so as a consequence my conclusions must be based in what I hear as the dominate dialogue. The voices of moderation are there, they carry little or no weight among fundamental Muslims for the moment and have no effect on ameliorating the violence done in the name of Allah.
He then asks me to list the number of Qur'ans I own, in what I can only imagine is some strange attempt to prove... something. I'll simply state that I only own a single printed copy of the Qur'an (the Abdullah Yusuf Ali translation) with both Arabic and English text. As all of the relevant materials are available online, I see no point in maintaining a large physical library on the subject. The Ali Qur’an is a good version, I prefer Pickthall, Each English version is slightly different in it’s interpretation, therefore it is important to read as many of the most popular versions in order to get a full understanding of the meanings. You cannot get all the different ones on the net. The hadiths and sunnas are available, but unless one has at least a rudimentary understanding of those texts and what to ask for on the net, it is very difficult to get meaningful information in a contextual manner. Reading the actual texts makes it much easier to assimilate the information.
I'll happily admit that I'm absolutely not an expert on Islam. I've never been a Muslim, nor have I "studied" it for decades. I'm merely an educated layman. But just as one doesn't need a medical degree to know to avoid the doctor who tells you acupuncture will cure your cancer, one doesn't need a degree in comparative theology to be able to see that Barry's claims fail to hold water; one just needs to do some simple comparisons between those claims and observable reality.
If standing up for democracy, human rights, freedom of speech and the rights of man by speaking about an ideology critically and unfettered is fearmongering, there will never be change for the better.
If this were all that Barry is doing, I'd have no problem with it. But when one stirs raw propaganda into the mix, as Barry does when he uncritically parrots those baseless claims from other, equally irrelevant sources, then there's no better word than "fearmongering" for what he's doing. All the posturing about human rights in the world won't change the underlying facts.
Show where I lie. You cannot, as there is no substance behind your accusations. If my groundless smears and malicious fearmongering are just that, then it should be no problem to prove these accusations. Please do.
I suspect that Barry should be careful what he wishes for. If there's any difficulty determining where I've already begun meeting this challenge, by all means, scroll upwards and start reading this email again. I imagine the most thorough way to meet Barry's demand is to just start going through his blog chronologically, starting at the beginning and, hopefully, some day catching up with his output. I'm not sure that I can address all of his inaccuracies and falsehoods in a timely fashion (I do have a life, after all, and my free time is sorely limited), but I'll see what I can do in a more incremental fashion.
That said, I suppose I should wait to address the remainder of his current email until later; since he's posted it on his blog, I suppose it'll keep until its turn comes.
So without further ado, on to the first post on Barry's blog, titled:
What the MSM doesn't tell you about Islam and Muslims
The title is accurate, in a technical sense; the mainstream media probably won't tell you these things about Islam and Muslims. Of course, Barry wants you to think it's because there's some sort of conspiracy going on and only he knows the Real Truth, but the real reason, I suspect, is more prosaic: because even in its current, debased state, the MSM is still -- at times -- at least a little bit wary of printing/broadcasting such transparently slanderous rumor, propaganda, and urban legend as if they were facts.
Welcome to Islam Today Oregon . As questions arise about Islam, Muslims and the world they inhabit it is difficult to get true, factual and real-time information about current events in Islamic countries, the voices behind the words, and the meaning behind the rhetoric.
No argument here. Of course, Barry will be happy to inform us of the "meaning" behind anything they say. As a rule of thumb, though, Barry apparently believes "if they say bad, hateful things, they speak for Islam as a whole, but if they say good, reasonable things, they are either lying or speak for only a tiny minority." Yep, that’s right. My belief exactly.
Islam, as defined today by all four schools of Sunni and Shi'ite jurisprudence
How is it that Barry defines all of Islam by only four schools of jurisprudence? Which four? There's the Jafari, the Hanafi, the Hanbali, the Layth bin Sa'ad, the Maliki, the Qurtubi, the Shafi'i, the Sufian Al'thawree, the Sufian bin O'yayna, the Tabari, the Zaidi, and the Zahiri, at least. And schools of jurisprudence don't have sacred authority; they have some intellectual firepower, certainly, and they are widely respected, but it's not at all forbidden to disagree with them. There's no infallibility doctrine in Islam when it comes to the legal opinions of men, no matter how powerful. The sunni and shia schools of jurisprudence are the recognized, authorative bodies regarding sharia law and Islamic behavior. Yes there are other schools, but there are only four in each sect recognized as the final authority by, you guessed it, Al-Azhar University and the Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani of Iran . The schools are: Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi'i, and Hanbali for sunni and the shi’ite schools are Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-`ashriyyah, Al-Ja`fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah. Actually the schools do have sacred authority, their recommendations are not usually deferred or negated. When you say “There's no infallibility doctrine in Islam when it comes to the legal opinions of men, no matter how powerful” you miss the salient point; in Islam there are no legal opinions of men, only the infallible word of Allah, which men only proscribe. Render unto Caesar does not exist in the Islamic world.
demands the death, subjugation or conversion of all non-Muslims, the institutionalisation of women as second-class citizens and mandates the conquest of all non-Muslim lands by all Muslims. The words, actions and deeds of those charged with leading Islam are militaristic, patriarchal, xenophobic and dangerous, a cult-like belief which transcends any humanitarian concerns.
In later installments, I will show that Barry has some peculiar ideas about who is "leading Islam." Suffice it to say that if one believes that Fred Phelps "leads" Christianity, one might then be willing to agree with Barry's statements on the matter. I am also very interested in finding out precisely what Barry means by "transcends any humanitarian concerns." Fred Phelps leads Christianity? Really? I didn’t know that!
Until Islam has a reformation, or at least an enlightenment the world will be engaged, in the words of Sam Huntington "a clash of civilisations". We stand as the vanguard of freedom, peace, honor and dignity for all and we will never give up, never give in.
Islam is reforming as we speak. Most Muslims wish no harm on non-Muslims. Most Muslims do not beat their wives. Most Muslims do not think it's okay to kill cartoonists. Yes, a small minority do these things. That minority is wrong, and fully deserving of condemnation. But to play that up as "a clash of civilizations" between the West and Islam as a whole unfairly demonizes the peaceful majority, and, as a recruiting tool, plays right into the hands of our enemies. Your right, most Muslims do not want anything to do with jihad. Most do not beat their wives. Most won’t kill a cartoonist. That does not negate or diminish how that “tiny minority of extremists” practices Islam, or acts upon the words of those charged with defining and leading Islam. By the way, hoow many is a tiny minority? Accepted numbers for that tiny group has been estimated at between 5% and 15% of Muslims world-wide. See Gallup and Dalia Mogahed and John Esposito for details on those numbers. If this is true, there are between 80M and 240M Muslims practicing the fundamental aspects of Islam. That is far from a tiny minority. Jihadists will continue to swell the ranks, and no matter what I say, or how the west tries to re-define Islam jihad will continue, both here and across the globe.
"All Muslims are not terrorists, but(virtually) all terrorists are Muslim.”
Maybe the reasons we fear Islam is not because we misunderstand it, but because those who blow themselves up in pizza parlors, or blow up a car, or try to take a plane down use texts and tenets of Islam to justify their actions. They yell Allahu Akbar as they light the fuse or pull the trigger, they use the Qur’an as their guide and they tell us they are willing to die for Allah. Hmmm, tells me there is something very wrong with Islam and some Muslims.
Apparently we couldn't even get through the very first post on Barry's blog without running into a blatant, easily-disproven falsehood. Peruse the FBI's terrorism report and you'll discover that between the years 1980 and 2005, Muslims perpetrated a small (around six or seven percent) minority of the terrorist attacks on US soil. Europol, similarly, publishes numbers for attacks in Europe (though only 2007-2010 appear to be currently available), and it turns out that less than one percent of terror attacks in Europol member states were perpetrated by Muslims.
Once again, there appears to be absolutely zero proof to support Barry's very direct claim here. I've provided evidence to suggest this claim is false. I encourage Barry to prove me wrong by providing the evidence supporting this declaration.
OK, here it is, and only for the past two months. I never said anything about attacks exclusively on American soil, only that Muslims are responsible for the majority of attacks related to jihad.
