Egypt snubs the Vatican

The protests in Egypt over the persecution of Christians, and the Pope coming out and publically scolding the Egyptian government over their unwillingness to stand up to the hardliners has caused the seat of Sunni power, Al-Azhar University and it's head cleric, Ahmed Al-Tayeb of al-Azhar to break off interfaith dialogue with the Vatican.  It is stunning to see how Islam and Muslims are always the victim, always the ones who have been wronged bu the evil West.  I am waiting for the University and Al-Tayeb to announce that it is the Zionists who are really behind this.

Sunni Islam's al-Azhar freezes talks with the Vatican

Cairo - Al-Azhar, one of Sunni Islam's oldest universities and mosques said Thursday it has indefinitely suspended inter-faith talks with the Vatican in response to recent remarks by Pope Benedict XVI on attacks against Christians in the Middle East. The decision was taken in light of Benedict's 'repeated negative references to Islam and his claims that Muslims persecute those living among them in the Middle East,' Al-Azahr said in statement sent to the German Press Agency dpa.

Well, there is "...fight in the name of Allah until his religion reigns supreme..."(2-190/193) or "...smite them at their necks until they feel themselves subdued..."(9-29) or ".. take no disbelievers as friends..."(3-28).  Do those qualify as a claim that "..muslims persecute those living among them.." or is this just a misunderstanding of Islam?

Al-Azhar, which is a Cairo-based government institution, and the Vatican have previously cooperated to promote dialogue between Christians and Muslims.
However, relations were shaken when Benedict earlier this month condemned a New Year's Eve bombing of a Christian Coptic church in Alexandria that killed 23 people.

The pontiff's words drew criticism from Egypt's top Muslim cleric, Ahmed Al-Tayeb of al-Azhar University who described then as an 'unacceptable interference in Egypt's affairs.'

In other words, be the good and faithful dhimmi and shut up.
