The Islamic slog through Nigeria

The attacks in Nigeria by jihadists are becoming a blur now, virtually every day more die in the name of Allah and Islam gains a little tighter grip on the brass ring. It is almost not worth reporting, as the theme of each article is the same, but the importance of never forgetting that Islam is expanding across the globe with no letup means that these and other daily atrocities must continue to be reported, as regrettable as they are to rad. If you want to complain, direct your anger at those creating the stories, not on those of us who report what is happening.

Churches, police targeted in deadly Nigeria attacks

Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has claimed responsibility for a string of bomb attacks in the country's north and warned that more attacks will follow.

About 150 people were killed in the bomb attacks and gun battles waged across the north-eastern city of Damaturu, a rescue agency official said on Saturday (local time).

"I was involved in the evacuation of corpses to the morgue. I personally counted 150 bodies," the official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said at the hospital.

He said some families had already collected their loved ones for burial, reducing the number to 97 by end of the day.

The Red Cross earlier said the death toll stood at 63, while police spoke of 53.

Many people were also injured as the coordinated attacks targeted police stations, churches and an army base.

A Red Cross spokesman said most of the dead were in Damaturu.

"There are extensive fire and bomb blasts in some areas especially the police headquarters, the federal secretariat. But I also learned there are about two or three churches that were also attacked and burned," the spokesman said.

Witnesses say the attacks began on Friday night and lasted for about 90 minutes.

(...)Boko Haram, whose name translates as 'Western education is sin', is considered the most serious security threat to Africa's most populous nation.

Nigeria, a country of more than 160 million people, is almost divided in half between Muslims and Christians, with its Muslims population living mainly in the country's north.
