There is almost too much theological support for what happened to the teacher, but one needs only to reference 9-29, or 2-190/193, 8-39, 47-4 to understand that the attackers were following Islam exactly as Muhammad laid down 1400 years ago. These are not extremists, or radicals, or "misunderstanders" of Islam, they are an example of a perfect Muslim.
A smashed skull and slashed face were to be reminders that it is not a good idea to insult Islam, and that infidels are not allowed to teach young Muslim women. Since only Muslim men are to be teaching Muslim girls (as per 4-34) it makes sense the attackers did what they did.
They couldn't be those Islamophobes we keep hearing about now, could they?

Four men launched a horrific attack on a teacher in which they slashed his face and left him with a fractured skull because they did not approve of him teaching religion to Muslim girls.
