I saw this piece when it broke, but thought nothing of it. With no suspect name, and a general description of the events it passed below my radar as just another weird accident.
Now that the name of the driver has been released, there is more to tell, and analyse.
The drivers name is Sam Hassan Daly, a 52-year-old devout Muslim.

Taxi Plows Into Crowd in San Diego
SAN DIEGO -- A taxi cab driver plowed slowly into a crowd on a sidewalk in San Diego's busy Gaslamp District early Saturday, injuring more than two dozen people, police said.
The San Diego Union-Tribune reported that the crash occurred about 2 a.m. in the middle of the popular restaurant and nightclub zone, close to the city's convention center.
One young woman was pinned against a wall by the cab and had her leg severed.
Officer Michael Stirk said security guards from a nearby nightclub detained the driver. He was then transported to a hospital with a broken nose after being beaten by angry members in the crowd and having his taxi’s windows smashed.
Stirk said the driver, who is between 40 and 50 years old, either fell asleep or passed out. Alcohol was not involved, he said.
If he is the devout Muslim as claimed, alcohol would be the last thing on his mind.

Barry, some additonal information about Mr. Daly: Daly is an Egyptian immigrant who worked as a doctor in his native country before taking a job driving a cab in San Diego(remember the Muslim "doctor"in Glasgow Scotland and how he drove his car filled with explosives through the airport arrivals building)? Court documents indicate Daly has lived in San Diego for at least seven years and that his given name is “Ossama Hassan El-Darandaly.” He changed his name to Sam Hassan Daly around 2005. Daly’s roommate, Dan Rose, told us Hassan has been having financial and personal problems. ”Just very irregular behavior, kind of up and down, a little bit recluse, depressed type of behavior,” said Rose.
The cab driver owns a house in Clairemont, but told his roommate that the bank is foreclosing on the property. Documents obtained by NBC San Diego reveal Daly filed for bankruptcy four years ago. Rose said Daly sent what money he could back to Egypt.
Daly has 8 other prior traffic violations and was charged with misdemeanor battery. Prosecutors later dismissed that case. Investigators now say 36 people were injured Saturday morning when Hassan's taxi crashed into the crowd of people outside Stingaree nightclub. As for the crash, some victims don’t believe it was an accident. ”No horns, no brakes, no screeching no yelling – not anyone saying – get out of the way.” ”All these people were out there waiting in line for their cabs, it was just the worst possible time.”
There have been several other suspicious incidents involving Muslim drivers over the last few years. Mohammed Reza Taheri-Azar explicitly grounded his hit-and-run in the teachings of the Koran. Munir Muthana told the police who arrested him that “the Muslims will fix this country.” Omeed Aziz Popal, we were told, was suffering from stress from an arranged marriage. Ismail Yassin Mohamed, we were informed, was mentally ill, suffered from depression, and hadn’t being taking his medication. And Muhammad Teshale, according to “law enforcement officials,” “did it to be famous.”
And yet “some victims don’t believe it was an accident,”; bystanders were so enraged when it first happened that they dragged Daly out of his cab and started kicking and punching him — not behavior one usually sees after an accident. Daly, for his part, came out of the cab clutching a pair of scissors, and apparently tried to attack the club manager with them — again, not behavior one usually associates with someone who has just caused a terrible accident and is contrite and horrified.
