More Fort Hood Plotter Details Emerge
(NewsCore) - WACO, Texas -- The Muslim soldier who was arrested after allegedly planning an attack on Fort Hood in Texas had enough materials for two bombs, FOX News Channel reported late Saturday.
Pfc. Naser Jason Abdo, 21, was arrested Wednesday and was charged in court Friday with one count of carrying an unregistered firearm.
He is expected to be charged with more serious crimes at a later date. He remains in federal custody and faces up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine on the unregistered firearm charge.
According to law enforcement officials, the target of Abdo's plot was to be a restaurant outside the Fort Hood post that was frequented by members of the military. The attack was to involve at least one bomb blast followed by a shooting attack.
Authorities told FOX News Channel Saturday that in a search of Abdo's hotel room they found 18lbs (8kg) of sugar, a pressure cooker and smokeless gunpowder that was to be used as the trigger. He had enough bomb making materials for two bombs, they said.
"He was all ready to go," one law enforcement source said.
The bomb making materials and methodology was "straight out of Inspire magazine and an al Qaeda explosives course manual," one counterterrorism source said, referring to the terrorist organization's English-language magazine.
A second source confirmed that two additional Fort Hood soldiers have been questioned about Abdo.
According to the criminal complaint, Abdo admitted to the arresting officers that he intended to conduct an attack in Killeen and Fort Hood and that he had explosives in his backpack and his hotel room.
It was revealed last week that police found a gun, ammunition, two clocks, and two spools of auto wire in Abdo's backpack, along with an article entitled "Make a bomb in the kitchen of your Mom."
Inside Abdo's hotel room, police discovered an electric drill, two clocks, five shotgun shells, four razorblades and ammunition for guns.
The criminal complaint stated that Abdo admitted to planning to assemble two bombs in his hotel room using gunpowder and shrapnel placed into pressure cookers. Prosecutors said Abdo intended to set off these bombs at a Fort Hood restaurant popular with servicemen and women.
Fort Hood was the site of the November 2009 shooting massacre where Muslim Army Major Nidal Hasan allegedly opened fire, killing 13 people and injuring another 32. Hasan, 40, has been charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder and could face the death penalty if he is convicted.
