No New Years in Saudi Arabia

Let the champaign corks pop, the confetti fly and the lampshades be worn, 2011 is a'comin!  Well, not in Saudi Arabia, anyway.  Added to the list of "things you cannot do because Muhammad did not do them" is any New Years celebrations, of any kind, anywhere.  No Old man time, no aud lange sine and no popping of anything.  My favorite repressive government agency, the aptly named "Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice" to confiscate and dismantle any kind of New Year display, and to make sure no stores are selling said materials.

H*#&y N#@ Y*%@, infidel!

JEDDAH: The Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice (Haia) has directed all its branch offices to be on the lookout for any year-end celebration, the director general of the Haia in Makkah province Sheikh Ahmad Al-Ghamdi said in a statement to Arab News on Friday.

"This(action), however, does not prevent Muslims from participating in the celebrations of the non-Muslims on condition that this participation should not touch the basics of the Islamic faith," said Sheikh Al-Ghamdi.

Since virtually everything about non-Muslims is against the Islamic faith, the sheik is saying do not participate in New Years, or any other infidel celebrations.
So much for bridge-building and interfaith dialogue.
