“it coincides with the constitutional article that calls for the protection of the Islamic identity of the Iraqi people.”

And what exactly could be so important that it calls for the protection of the Islamic identity of the Iraqi people?

Banning smoking and drinking.

This is the democracy we brought to Iraq.  A constitution which enshrines sharia law and makes Islam the official state religion.  This is what we get for our money.  A country which is an anathema to our own, and one which is on the way to being our worst nightmare.

Iraqi MP calls on Parliament to set law on fighting alcohols.

BAGHDAD / Aswat al-Iraq: The Legislature for the Iraqi Parliament’s Health Committee, Ammar Tu’ma, has called on the Parliament on Saturday to set a law for fighting alcohols, to be presented with the law on fighting smoking.

“I demand the setting out of a draft-law for fighting alcohols, to be presented with the draft-law for fighting smoking,” Tu’ma said in a statement, copy of which was received by Aswat al-Iraq news agency.

Tu’ma justified his proposal saying that “it coincides with the constitutional article that calls for the protection of the Islamic identity of the Iraqi people.”

The Parliament’s session on Saturday includes the first reading of the draft-law to fight smoking.
