The old "I'm lost, can you point me to the highway" excuse at CA Marine base

I have to admit, the balls these guys have is impressive.  Drive right up to the gate and feign ignorance as to where you are or how to get to where you want to go.  Now we know guys are not too bright with maps or directions, but the gate to Camp Pendleton is not exactly the place one thinks to ask directions from.  Then to drive onto the base without permission, well that usually gets you shot, in this case the three men were released without charges.

Why?

From ABC News March 30

Security alert issued at Camp Pendleton

A security alert was reportedly issued at Camp Pendleton after three Middle-Eastern men in two vehicles drove onto the base under suspicious circumstances Saturday night around midnight.

The drivers said they didn't know each other, but both said they were lost and trying to get to Glendale.

Glendale is close to 75 miles from Pendleton.

One of the drivers reportedly ignored orders to wait at the main gate and drove onto the base.

A search turned up no weapons.

But an airbag had been pulled out and reattached with duct tape and wires were hanging free.

The charge which deploys the airbag is used also to detonate IED's, and the only way to get them is to dismantle the bag.  Duct tape and hanging wires could be a sign the driver had done just that.

The next morning the other driver returned to the base and said he made a mistake and was trying to get onto Interstate 5.

There are more questions than answers here and it bothers me.

A background check showed that the men all had clean records.
